Here we go again! There's legislation to protect the tenants--but NOT the landlords! Do you know that most tenants have CHOSEN not to pay rent because of the moratorium? It's not fair to us who have to support ourselves and our families.

On February 17, 2021 Maryland General Assembly held a hearing on many bills that would negatively impact landlords, including HB1312, entitled Covid-19 Eviction and Housing Emergency Relief Act of 2021. The Maryland House of Delegates heard the bill jointly in the Judiciary Committee and the Environment and Transportation Committee. The bill was cross-filed in the Maryland Senate as SB910 to be heard in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee on March 2, 2021. However, the hearing may be viewed that occurred in the House joint Committees is online. You may find the discussions interesting and most informative. We are very proud of the Delegates and witnesses that testified against the proposed bills with insightful and valid points on how greater restrictions against landlords are not the answer. Here is a link to the YouTube video of that Maryland General Assembly Joint hearing. House Bill 1312 starts being discussed at the 7:00 mark, but the earlier discussions were also informative. It is imperative that you contact the members of the Judiciary Committee, the Environment and Transportation Committee and the Judicial Proceedings Committee and voice your concerns, succinctly expressing how the current non-payment of rent has negative impacted you both financially and otherwise. Their email addresses have been provided for your convenience in a prior email message from MarylandRentCourt.com. Don't forget to contact your representatives in the House and Senate about both HB1312 and SB910. Your voice is our best advocacy. Let's be informed and stay informed while we raise the issues that are likely to be the unintended consequences of this proposed legislation. To be better informed read the Fiscal Note for the bills, which can be found on the Maryland General Assembly Website. We will update you on the bills as they proceed through the legislature. In the meantime we want all of you to know how proud we are to see so many of you getting involved in our local legislative process. |
